This is a sad story. Travis Malouff, age 42, was attempting to eat a half pound glazed doughnut at Voodoo Doughnuts on Sunday morning when he began choking. It seems help was not able to arrive in time and passed away from "asphyxia, due to obstruction of the airway," according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
A lot of people have been pointing fingers as to who to blame, but sometimes bad things just happen to good people. According to family and friends, Travis was an energetic guy with a great personality and wouldn't back down from a challenge. My thoughts are certainly with his loved ones.
For those who are curious here's how Voodoo Doughnuts describes the challenge:
– You only get 80 seconds to eat a big doughnut equivalent to 1/2 dozen doughnuts.
– The doughnut weighs around .5 pounds and has a 7″ diameter and 1.625″ thickness.
– You are allowed to drink liquids with the challenge and/or dunk the doughnut.
– Time begins as soon as you touch the doughnut. You can’t separate it beforehand.

This may or may not sway the company to remove the challenge but remember to be careful with any eating contest that you may attempt.
